Things to Do in Moscow

Oct 23, 2023 By Sean William

When it was first documented 800 years ago, the capital of Russia was only a little village, but now there is plenty to do here to keep you occupied for months at a time. This is the definitive list of things to do in Moscow for first-time visitors, and it includes everything from seeing the Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral to taking a cable car ride from Sparrow Hills and ice skating in Gorky Park. Did you know Culture Trip now offers small-group outings that may be booked in advance? Choose from genuine and immersive trips such as Epic Trips, short and action-packed trips like Little Trips, and dazzling and vast such as Sailing Trips.

Red Square

The Kremlin, St. Basil's Cathedral, and Lenin's Mausoleum are just a few of the remarkable structures that can be seen around Red Square, which serves as the beating heart of the Russian capital and is the location of a significant amount of the country's historical events. What was originally a modest market square has been recognized as the location throughout Russia's turbulent history as the spot where rebels have been killed, demonstrations have been held, and military prowess has been placed on display.

St Basil's Cathedral

Regardless of the length of time you want to spend in Moscow, you should schedule some time to take in the iconic picture of Russia's capital city, which features the shimmering St. Basil's Cathedral rainbow roofs. It was intended for onion-shaped domes to give the impression that the structure was composed of flames from a campfire. The church was commissioned in 1500s by Ivan Terrible.

Lenin's Mausoleum

Lenin's Mausoleum is one of Russia's most divisive tourist destinations since it contains the embalmed corpse of the great Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lenin in a glass tomb. Some people adore it, while others find it repulsive. The Mausoleum was first opened to the public in August of 1924, and it now receives around 2.5 million visits yearly. These people, who presumably do not mind waiting in line and submitting themselves to a rigorous check, come to be in Lenin's presence.

Moscow Kremlin

The Kremlin in Moscow is the largest operational fortress in Europe, and it has enough attractions to fill a whole week. When you finally make it through the walls that stretch for 2,235 meters (7,332 feet), there are five squares to explore, various structures to investigate, 20 towers to get familiar with, and the biggest bell and cannon in the world to see.

GUM

GUM is the most important department store in Russia, and it has a breathtaking interior that is home to several upscale stores. The iconic shop was constructed between 1890-1893 and was known as Upper Trading Rows until 1920s. It is currently home to over 100 boutiques offering a range of brands, ranging from the more expensive Dior to the more wallet-friendly Zara. Even if shopping is not high on your priority list of things to do in Moscow, visiting the GUM is worthwhile. This glass-roofed arcade overlooks Red Square and has several upscale dining options.

Arbat Street

One of the most popular tourist destinations in Moscow is the Arbat, a stylish pedestrian boulevard located directly in the heart of the historic district. Arbat is often packed with tourists due to its abundance of cafés and restaurants, live music performers, caricaturists, monuments, tattoo parlors, and a theater. In addition, there are several gift stores and tattoo parlors.

Tretyakov Gallery

The Tretyakov brothers were notable 19th-century philanthropists whose private collection was the basis for the Tretyakov Gallery, built between 1900 and 1905. Viktor Vasnetsov was the architect behind the gallery, which houses one of the world's largest collections of Russian art. Classics from before the revolution will be displayed, including works by Valentin Serov and Mikhail Vrubel and Alexei Savrasov's The Rooks, Have Come Again. Also on exhibit are works of art by the great masters of the past, such as Rublev's Trinity.

Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts

The world's greatest museum devoted to art from other cultures is located in Moscow. It consists of three separate buildings that house an astonishing collection of works created by masters of ancient civilizations, the Italian Renaissance, and the Dutch Golden Age. Botticelli, Tiepolo, Veronese, and Rembrandt are among the artists whose works are housed in the main structure. Some of these treasures have never been shown publicly before. An outstanding collection of impressionistic and post-impressionist paintings may be seen at the Gallery of European and American Art, which can be found just next door.
